[Nott is particularly practiced in getting the drop on enemies and surprising them from the shadows. For that reason, she can stay out of harms way more often than not, even compared to Caleb's tried and true methodology of staying 30 feet back at all times. He doesn't have her much smaller size on his side, or her ability to slip through an enemy's reach and maneuver herself quickly on the field of battle.
Sometimes, this works against her.
Like when a regular old battle against a couple confused, angry orcs that happened upon Caleb and Nott in the Cyrengreen Forest ended up hiding more than the they bargained for.
There was something strange in the forest. Something causing illusions, trickery, and confusion to all those who entered, until they were stuck in the forest for days on end, only to be spit out worse for wear, or never again. After taking a job from the board in Trostenwald for some extra coin on the way to retrieve some young hunters who had been lost near Cyrengreen and suspected to have entered the forest, the Mighty Nein played it safe by locating a hermetic druid who could purportedly travel through the forest unhindered.
Unfortunately, Caleb and Nott rounding up the back of the traveling party were not so unhindered. They have been alone in the forest for nearly a day now. It's dark, and confusing, and that's probably why Nott didn't see the shambling mound as she hid from the orcs before she was slammed by its heavy vines, sent flying across the forest into a tree with a sickening crack.
Stumbling to her feet, orcs apparently scared off of the new creature's appearance, or possibly confused by the illusions of the forest, all Nott sees is the mound swallowing her crossbow bolts into its body as it stumbles towards her, until finally its vines squeeze and engulf her tiny form into itself.]
[ Caleb's been muttering variations on that phrase for the entirety of this venture. He isn't convinced this isn't all some elaborate illusion, but there's very little he can do about it now. He'd thought he'd heard Fjord's voice shouting, but before he could try to pull Nott towards it there had been the orcs, and now there was—
A ravenous mound. It reminds Caleb of fairy tales from his childhood. He refuses to dwell on any of those memories, though his mother's voice comes to him with painful clarity. ]
Nott!
[ Can he set fire to the mound? Caleb finds himself utterly at a loss as to what he can do that won't hurt Nott in the process. Casting about, he curses a few times to himself before beginning to mutter the words to dispel magic. If this isn't a trick of the mind, then he'll have to try sending out a few bursts of flame. Perhaps the damage would not be too great, and the heat would encourage the earth to spit Nott back to him. ]
sorry for the delay cries no pressure if you'd rather drop it
[The mound of earth and moss and grass only wiggles a bit in response to the spell, seeming to have little effect. Apparently, out of the various illusory things surrounding them, the shambling mound itself is real.
Nott's feet are all that stick out now, but her cries are silent. Inside, she cannot breathe. Her ankles kick uselessly as the mound shudders and starts to... move in the other direction. Away from Caleb.
Seems like it got what it wanted. Doesn't seem like there'd be room in its earthy maw for two.]
